How to Build Successful Relationships with Suppliers for Your New Business

Nevada Small Business Development Center • October 30, 2024

When starting a new business, one of the most critical steps to ensure success is to secure the right suppliers. Whether you're sourcing products or raw materials, getting suppliers on board can make or break your success. But how do you approach suppliers when your business is still new? The key lies in reducing their perceived risk.

Understanding Supplier Risk

Suppliers, like any other business, want to minimize their risk. They typically assess risk based on several factors, including:

  1. The Size of Your Order: Larger orders can make suppliers more hesitant, especially if there’s no past relationship. A small but regular order might ease their concerns.
  2. Past Relationship: If you have a history with a supplier, they’ll feel more comfortable. For new businesses, though, this can often be a hurdle.
  3. Payment Terms: Offering to pay upfront is the quickest way to alleviate a supplier’s risk. If you're willing to pay in advance, the supplier is more likely to overlook the size or reputation of your business.
  4. The Size and Reputation of Your Business: Larger, more established companies seem less risky to suppliers. As a new business, you might not have this advantage, but you can still present yourself as serious and professional by clearly understanding and articulating your needs.

Making a Good First Impression

The simplest way to reduce a supplier's risk is by offering to pay upfront. Suppliers are ultimately concerned with getting paid, so paying in advance reassures them that you're serious. However, conveying legitimacy goes beyond payment alone.

Before you contact a supplier, ensure you know exactly what you need. Being indecisive or vague may signal inexperience, which can scare off potential suppliers. Take time to research and fully understand your business needs, so when you do reach out, you can confidently present your request or offer.

Some suppliers have websites where you can order limited quantities of products at retail prices. For wholesale rates, however, you’ll likely need to set up a wholesale account. This typically involves submitting business and tax information, which again, demonstrates to suppliers that you're operating a legitimate business.

Building a Relationship with Suppliers

While securing the first deal with a supplier is important, your long-term success depends on building strong relationships. Suppliers can be much more than just product sources—they can also offer valuable insights into market trends, new product opportunities, and even help you refine your offerings.

Suppliers generally fall into four categories:

  1. Manufacturers: Typically offer the lowest prices, but shipping costs might be higher depending on their location.
  2. Distributors: They offer flexibility in terms of small orders from various manufacturers, though at a higher price per item.
  3. Independent Craftspeople: Often offer exclusive distribution deals for unique, handmade products.
  4. Import Sources: Many businesses purchase foreign goods through domestic importers, which can streamline the process but come with additional costs.

As you explore different supplier options, remember that reliability and stability are critical. You need suppliers who can consistently deliver the right products on time and who have a solid track record. Additionally, the supplier’s location plays a role. Shipping costs and delivery times can vary greatly depending on where the supplier is based, so consider this when making your decisions.

Finding the Right Supplier

Whether you're reaching out to manufacturers, distributors, or independent craftspeople, the key to success lies in reducing their risk, showing your professionalism, and building long-term partnerships that can sustain our business into the future.

By being prepared and demonstrating your seriousness, you’ll increase your chances of securing the suppliers you need to grow your business.

In 2025, even though digital marketing is everywhere, direct mail is making a big comeback! Here are three reasons why sending postcards is still a smart choice for businesses: 1. Direct Mail Stands Out in a Crowded World When you check your email, you probably get tons of messages—maybe over 30 in an hour! But when you get physical mail, you only get a few pieces a day, so postcards are much easier to notice. They stand out and grab your attention right away! 2. Reach People Who Aren’t Always Online Not everyone spends all their time online. Direct mail postcards are great because they can reach people who don’t use the internet much, like older, wealthier demographics. This means postcards can connect with people that digital ads miss. 3. Physical Postcards Are Easy to Understand Digital ads can be confusing or take time to understand, but postcards are simple. You can read them quickly and get the message right away. It’s easy to remember, so people are more likely to act on it. In a world full of digital ads, postcards offer a fun, easy, and smart way for businesses to reach people in 2025. Book an Appointment and Get 5,000 Free Postcards! This blog has been updated to reflect the most recent court decision. 12/27/24 Update: UPDATE: ON DECEMBER 23, 2024 THE FIFTH COURT OF APPEALS REVERSED THE TEXAS COURT’S INJUNCTION CONCERNING THE REQUIRED FILING OF BENEFICIAL OWNERSHIP INFORMATION . ON DECEMBER 26, 2024 THE INJUNCTION WAS REINSTATED. BECAUSE THIS RULING IS CONSISTANTLY CHANGING, WE ENCOURAGE MEMBERS TO STILL FILE BY THE DEADLINE OF JANUARY 13, 2025. WE WILL CONTINUE TO MONITOR THIS ISSUE AND WILL UPDATE MEMBERS AS WE LEARN MORE. 12/23/24 Update: UPDATE: THE FIFTH COURT OF APPEALS HAS REVERSED THE TEXAS COURT’S INJUNCTION CONCERNING THE REQUIRED FILING OF BENEFICIAL OWNERSHIP INFORMATION . IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY SUBMITTED YOUR INFORMATION, YOU MUST DO SO BY JANUARY 13, 2025. Background on the Corporate Transparency Act (CTA) The CTA, which went into effect on January 1, 2024, mandates that most entities created or registered under state law in the United States disclose detailed information about their beneficial owners to the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN). This requirement was intended to combat illicit activities such as money laundering and terrorism financing by increasing transparency in corporate ownership. The Court's Decision The case, Texas Top Cop Shop, Inc., et al. v. Garland, et al., challenged the constitutionality of the CTA. The lower court found that the CTA likely exceeds Congress's legislative powers and poses significant threats to constitutional rights. The court described the Act as "quasi-Orwellian" and expressed concerns that it could set a dangerous precedent for federal overreach. On December 23, 2024, the Fifth Court of Appeals stayed the Texas court’s decision, compelling compliance with the filing requirements. What's Next? There may be more whiplash in the coming days on this issue. We will do all that we can to provide you with timely updates. The Henderson Chamber of Commerce is committed to keeping our membership informed, ensuring they are up to date with the latest requirements, and providing support in navigating this regulatory landscape. Trust that we will keep abreast of any developments and promptly communicate pertinent information to our valued members.
Insurance

Launching a new business is an exciting venture, but with that excitement comes many important decisions, including one that can be both confusing and stressful: business insurance. Many new entrepreneurs find themselves asking two key questions: What kind of insurance do I need? and Where do I start looking? In this guide, we’ll walk you through the essentials, helping you better understand your insurance options to navigate and select the right coverage for your business. What Kind of Insurance Does Your Business Need? With dozens of different policies to consider, navigating the world of business insurance can be overwhelming. To help simplify the process, let’s take a closer look at the six most common types of insurance that small businesses typically need: General Liability Insurance This policy helps protect your business from claims related to bodily injury or property damage that might occur during the course of business. If you run a product-based business, it’s worth considering Product Liability Insurance , which specifically protects against claims related to injuries or damage caused by your product. Business Income Coverage (Business Interruption Insurance) This type of insurance can help replace lost income if your business is forced to close unexpectedly due to a covered event, such as a fire or natural disaster. It can provide crucial support during periods when your business isn’t operational. Commercial Property Insurance This policy safeguards your business’s physical property—such as buildings, equipment, or inventory—if they are damaged due to covered incidents like fire, theft, or vandalism. Workers’ Compensation Insurance In Nevada, if you have any employees, you’re legally required to carry Workers’ Compensation Insurance. This coverage provides benefits to employees who are injured or become ill on the job, covering medical expenses and lost wages. Commercial Auto Insurance If you or your employees use vehicles for business purposes, this policy covers accidents that occur while you’re on the clock, helping pay for damages or injuries. Professional Liability Insurance (Errors and Omissions Insurance) This is a must for service-based businesses. It protects you from claims related to mistakes made while providing professional services—such as negligence, misrepresentation, or errors in advice. Professionals like consultants, engineers, physical therapists, and attorneys often carry this type of insurance. For many small business owners, combining multiple types of coverage into a Business Owner’s Policy (BOP) is a practical solution. A BOP typically bundles General Liability Insurance, Business Income Coverage, and Commercial Property Insurance into a single, more affordable package. Where Should You Start Looking for Business Insurance? Once you have a clear understanding of the insurance types your business may need, the next step is figuring out where to acquire these policies. Here are a few helpful tips: Consult Your Personal Insurer If you’re satisfied with your personal insurance provider, they might also offer commercial insurance options. Reach out to them to see what business insurance packages they recommend. Ask Your Business Neighbors If you’ve set up a physical location for your business, asking neighboring business owners about their insurance providers may yield some great recommendations. Tap Into Your Network Fellow entrepreneurs can be a valuable resource. Ask other small business owners, both in person and online (through forums or social media groups), for their insights on the best insurance providers. Tips for Getting the Right Business Insurance While finding the right insurance policy may seem daunting, here are a few tips to ensure you make informed decisions: ● Compare Policies First, Then Prices: Don’t just go for the cheapest option—make sure you’re getting the coverage your business truly needs. ● Read Policies Carefully: Take the time to understand what’s covered (and what isn’t) before committing to a policy. ● Research Provider Reviews: Look into the reputation of the insurance companies you’re considering. Pay attention to customer reviews and industry ratings. ● Consult Experts: The Nevada Small Business Development Center (SBDC) is a fantastic resource for new and existing business owners.
